I love to hate the way I love you.

I hate to love the way I hate you.

This exhibition by Patricia Bentancur is formed by drawings, photographs, objects and videos and is according to herself based on (our) own collective memory. Through personal references the artist recalls the mnemonic context of her home country, Urugay, as well as Latin America and other parts of the world.

Narratives evolve between memory and obscurity, leaving questions of reality and story telling. Through simplicity the artist pervades and provides cues for a foundation meaning proposing the subjects of communication, informational manipulation, silence and blindness as the intricate conflicts around the world.

Bringing together different pieces by using artistic devices as tools, Patricia Bentancur reflects on contemporary social and political matters from an individual point of view.

And for the audience, she leaves behind something more significant to reflect on.

Vernissage: 29th of April 2011, Candyland (Stockholm)

Logiiraz Ganbat, the artist of “Dirt Maché”, has been investigating Mongolia’s traditional technique of papier-mâché since 1991 but Ganbat is originally from Mongolia. This technique used to be applied for Buddhist sculptures but has been banned by the communist regime since the 20’s.

Through interviews with elderly monks has Logiiraz Ganbat been able to develope a technique that can be compared with the one that was used for hundreds of years ago. He works with both traditional Buddhist sculptures and experimental ones and for this exhibition he displays papier-mâché made of various natural material such as white pepper, hair, grass and red capsicum.

Vernissage: 29th of April 2011, ID:I (Stockholm)

“De gamla Greckiskorna” by Christian Sandell is the name of a new exhibition in gallery ID:I. The enjoyable title means “The Old Greek Woman”.

There is a fascinating story which lies behind the art work. The artist´s father is from Greece and Christian Sandell obviously has strong connection to his “fatherland”. In ancient Greece, widows usually wore black after the death of their husbands and some of them did it for the rest of their lives. There’s even a verb in Greek which means to ‘dress in black’, describing the old custom. According to the artist, his Greek grandmother lost her husband but rejected the old custom while grieving. Her sister however, was always wearing black.

The installation represent three Greek women dressed in black, one of them appearing to be dead. The “faces” reflects the artist´s passion for old cameras.

The artist is also showing two of his earlier art works made in 1999. “I was cleaning at my studio the other day and found these two. I thought they fitted perfectly to this exhibition,” says the friendly artist.

Date: 29th of April – 15th of May 2011

Artist: Christian Sandell

Place: ID:I galleri, Tjärhovsgatan 19, Stockholm

“Artist books” is a group exhibition by students (master year one) at Konstfack and is located at a gallery that is run by Grafiska Sällskapet.

Konsthopp passed by the opening on Tuesday afternoon were the energy was vibrant and the place crowded.

At the same gallery there is also another exhibition going on by Cathrine Johansson, which is running until the 4th of May. Konsthopp has a soft spot for her work so if you are wandering around Slussen we highly recommend you to take a side turn from Götgatan and check out both of these exhibitions.
